Introduction

The choice between practical effects and CGI is less about technology and more about intention. That physical presence is often what makes practical effects feel believable. When a prosthetic wound catches real light, when a silicone body model has weight and texture, or when a hero prop can be touched, broken, moved, or performed with on set, the result gives actors and cinematographers something tangible to react to. This is especially important in close-ups, performance-driven scenes, horror, medical scenes, stunt work, creature effects, and any moment where the audience needs to feel that the object or transformation is truly present.
Practical effects are usually the stronger choice when the camera needs detail, texture, skin contact, physical interaction, or realistic material behavior. A well-made prosthetic appliance, silicone phantom, animal replica, or practical creature element can create an immediate sense of weight and realism that digital effects may need significant time and budget to reproduce convincingly.
That said, CGI plays a critical role when working with scale, safety, complexity, or impossible transformations. Large environments, dangerous scenarios, digital extensions, invisible cleanup, crowd work, and effects that cannot be achieved physically are often best handled with digital tools. CGI can expand what practical effects create, remove rigs, enhance movement, extend sets, or add layers that would be unsafe or unrealistic to build on set.
The strongest results usually come from choosing the method that serves the shot. Practical effects give the scene a grounded, camera-ready base. Digital effects refine, extend, or enhance that base when needed. The real decision is not whether practical effects or CGI are better, but which technique gives the production the most believable result for the story, schedule, budget, safety, and visual language.

This is why most high-end productions combine both approaches. Practical effects create a grounded, believable base, while CGI is used to extend, refine, clean up, or transform the final result. CGI brings flexibility, scale, correction, and transformation to the final image. The best productions use both intentionally, choosing the method that makes the shot feel most believable.

This is especially valuable in close-up shots, practical horror scenes, medical realism, body effects, stunt inserts, and tactile production design.
For post-production teams, practical effects can provide a reliable foundation. Instead of building every detail from scratch, CGI can enhance what is already there: extending forms, cleaning edges, adding movement, removing rigs, improving continuity, or supporting transitions. This creates a more efficient and more believable result than treating practical and digital effects as separate disciplines.
When practical effects and CGI are used with intention, they create a seamless result that feels both grounded and visually compelling — something audiences instinctively recognize as real. The best question is not “Should we use practical effects or CGI?” The better question is: “What does the shot need to feel believable, safe, cinematic, and true to the story?”
